Edward J. Huggett, Jr. OD is a board certified physician specializing in Binocular Vision and Low Vision dedicating his life to helping patients of all ages who suffer from Severe Vision Loss and Vision Impairment. He developed the Low Vision Clinic at St. Luke's Cataract & Laser Institute in Tarpon Springs Florida. See St. Luke's Cataract & Laser Institute.

Prior to his career as an optometrist Dr. Huggett was a certified teacher for the Citrus County School Board teaching primary and secondary students in Crystal River, FL. Dr. Huggett received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida and Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston, Houston, Texas. While there he received training at the Lighthouse for the Blind in Low Vision and Low Vision Rehabilitation. While attending the University of Houston he taught physiologic optics to potential optometry students, 1987-89. Dr. Huggett completed an externship at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center, St. Petersburg, Florida.

Dr. Huggett developed the Low Vision Clinic at James Haley VA Medical Center Outpatient Clinic, New Port Richey, Florida, in 1990. He was the Team Eye Physician for the Major League Baseball Toronto Blue Jays in 1994 serving team needs and providing sports vision therapy. Dr. Huggett also specializes in Binocular Vision: muscle imbalances. He developed cognitive and vision exercises for the improvement of visual-motor integration and vision related learning and reading problems. These exercises are used today by patients, students and athletes both professional and amateur. Dr. Huggett is a Fellow of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists: www.IALVS.com and was Chairman for the Low Vision section of the Florida Optometric Association, 2008-2010. He has participated as a Study Center Adviser for John Hopkins University. He is co-presenter of the International Macular Degeneration Support Group: www.MDSupport.org. MDsupport.org is a monthly International Web-cast conference originally sponsored by the National Eye Institute which helps patients with Macular Degeneration and Severe Vision Loss worldwide. He has been providing binocular vision services in Pinellas County since 1990 and has expanded his practice to Pasco, Polk, Hillsborough and Marion counties.

He currently volunteers at the Shepherd Center in Tarpon Springs providing free eye exams and serving the visual needs of the less fortunate at no cost. He has also volunteered his time and services to non-profit medical missionary organizations. Dr. Huggett’s enumerable contribution to community charities and many civic organizations providing assistance for people with Severe Vision Loss identifies him as a modern humanitarian.

Dr. Huggett resides in Pasco county and enjoys spending time with family. Also enjoys traveling, scuba diving, snow skiing and gardening.
